Macbeth is terrified and speaks to the ghost, which is invisible to the others. Returning, Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost sitting at the head of the table. Instead, "the worm that's fled / Hath nature that in time will venom breed" (28-29) He thinks to himself that if only Fleance had died, his throne would be safe. The murderer speaks to Macbeth at the door, telling him that Fleance got away. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth begin the feast with the noble guests. Macbeth therefore hires two murderers to kill Banquo and his son, but the plan goes wrong. He believes that the murder of Duncan, which is heavy on his conscience, simply cleared a path for Banquo's sons to other throw Macbeth and rule Scotland (which was the witch’s third prediction - that Banquo's children will also be kings). He says that if the witches' prophecy is true, his reign will be a "fruitless crown", meaning he have no heir and the crown will be passed out of Macbeth's own family. He says that Banquo is the only man he fears. Macbeth mentions to Banquo that they should discuss Malcolm and Donalbain as the brothers have fled from Scotland and may be plotting against him.īanquo is alone and talks to himself through a monologue. Macbeth is dressed in royal clothing, followed by Lady Macbeth, now his queen. The witches predicted that Macbeth would be king and Banquo's children would be the heirs to the throne. In the royal palace of Forres (the residence of the late King Duncan), Banquo thinks about the prophecies of the weird sisters. ![]() Macbeth ignores him and speaks to himself, he wonders if the title of king will simply fall to him or if he will have to perform a dark deed in order to gain it. Banquo replies that devils often speak half-truths in order to "win us to our harm" (121). Macbeth is amazed that the prophecy is true and asks Banquo if he hopes for his children to become kings (121). They are interrupted by the arrival of Ross and Angus who announce that Macbeth has been made the new thane of Cawdor. Banquo laughs at it but Macbeth is excited. Macbeth fixates on the details of the prophecy. The call Banquo "lesser than Macbeth, and greater," and "not so happy, yet much happier" (63-65) then they tell Banquo that he will never become king but his children will. Next, they turn to Banquo and continue to speak in riddles. The witches also predict Macbeth will become King of Scotland. ![]() Macbeth is confused by the second title due to the fact that he hasn't heard of King Duncan's decision yet. They hail Macbeth as thane of Glamis (his original title) and as thane of Cawdor. When Macbeth first meets Lady Macbeth after killing Duncan his hands are stained with the blood of Duncan which causes him to be plagued by guilt.Travelling back from the battle against the Irish, Macbeth and his friend Banquo come across the three witches. In this line it becomes apparent that she is now completely consumed by guilt.įurthermore, the delusion of her bloodstained hands symbolizes the guilt that now sits like a permanent stain on her conscience. She asks as she wanders through the halls of the castle. who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?” This line refers to lady Macbeths new habit of sleepwalking which translates to her descent into madness. “I have two nights watched with you, but can perceive no truth in your report. The scene starts out with a doctor expressing his concern over Lady Macbeth’s deteriorating situation: This scene is no exception as it is set in lady Macbeth’s chamber over the course of one night. Many of the scenes in Macbeth takes place during the nighttime which adds to the eerie and mysterious atmosphere which generally runs throughout the play. This phenomenon is what Freud has famously dubbed “the horror of the uncanny”. The frightening edge between familiar and unfamiliar. We are afraid of things or people we don’t understand. What scares us? What is it that leaves us unable to sleep and rushing up the dark stairs after a scary movie? If we go through a list of the classic horror movie villains, we can come up with a possible answer.
